Are they Dupes: Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer vs NYX Angel Veil Primer

So a little while ago, I purchased the 10ml size of Hourglass Cosmetics’ Mineral Veil Primer. I’ve heard a LOT about this primer, and jumped at the chance to try it for a (relatively) lowish price. I’ve found it very good, but it’s also VERY expensive, so I tried looking for an alternative. Some Googling lead me to the NYX Angel Veil primer. I definitely think that Angel Veil is intended to specifically be an Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer dupe – NYX does have a track record of creating very similar, affordable options of more expensive products.

So, let’s compare the two:

Nyx Angel Veil Ingredients

Cyclopentasiloxane, Isododecane, Polysilicone-1, Cyclohexasiloxane, Glyceryl Stearate, Nylon-12, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Laureth-12, Alumina, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Phenoxyethanol, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891).

Hourglass Mineral Veil Ingredients

Zinc Oxide 4.20%, Titanium Dioxide 2.45%. Alumina, Cyclopentasiloxane, Hexyl Laurate, Isododecane, Peg-10 Dimethicone, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Polysilicone-11, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Stearic Acid.

Packaging

NYX Angel Veil
Hygienic plastic squeeze tub with pink cap. It feels kind of cheap, not just because it’s a tube though. Just the plastic they used. Better for travelling! It comes in 30ml/1oz tube, and it seems like in select countries they have a 60ml/2oz size.

Hourglass Mineral Veil
Frosted glass tube with a hygienic pump. Definitely more luxurious feeling, but you still need to be careful when travelling with it because it’s glass. However, the largest size does come in a tube. I love that you can get a small 10ml size to try. The standard packaging is 30ml, but they also have a jumbo-sized 60ml or 2oz tube.

Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer vs NYX Angel Veil Primer

Both give a blurred, matte, soft focus finish when applied. I found that Hourglass was slightly more runny and had more slip than NYX – probably due to the fact that it has a few more silicones present in the ingredients list than NYX. Interestingly, Hourglass doesn’t make any claims about oil control but NYX does. Unfortunately, I didn’t find that it had good oil control at all, and that the Mineral Veil actually had better oil control (at least for a little while).

For some reason, it felt like I needed a little bit less of the Hourglass primer – I squeezed out approximately equal amounts to use of each, and I had quite a bit of the Mineral Veil left over… So make of that what you will. I also found that my NYX tube needed to be shaken before use because it separated in the tube. Some people have had Hourglass do that to them, but I haven’t experienced it so far.

NYX on top, Hourglass on bottom

I preferred the consistency of Hourglass over NYX, it has more of that silicone ‘slip’ from the get go while you have to work the NYX primer for a little while before it feels the same.

My expectation for these two will mainly be for longevity of my foundation. I really don’t have high hopes for oil control, as I tend to oil through almost anything (including Estée Lauder Double Wear). However, my foundation does fade over time due to that.

12.30pm
Applied makeup – each product on one half of face. Today, I used MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NC25.

1.39pm
Angel Veil side a touch shinier, especially in nasio-labial fold. Undereye concealer is creasing under the Angel Veil side but not Mineral Veil.

2.19pm
Little bit of creasing and settling into pores around nostrils – funnily enough, settling is worse but the creasing isn’t so bad on the Angel Veil side, and creasing is worse but the settling isn’t so bad on the Mineral Veil side. Both are only visible up close though – not from a regular viewing distance. For comparison, Estée Lauder Double Wear settled into almost all the pores in the lower, central third of my face and looked absolutely awful. Blotted with paper to remove excess oil – both sides equally oily at this point. Foundation isn’t splitting anywhere on face – it’s even still on the end of my nose!

3.08pm
Shine is starting to come back but not as badly. I’m sweating cause it’s sooo hot.

3.30pm
Finally took decent photos! I didn’t realize I could take decent self portraits with my 40mm lens when I first put the makeup on, so I do apologize for not having photos from that. I will say that my makeup looks pretty much the same, I’m just way more shiny now.

4.00pm
Pretty much completely shiny again, so I blotted. Getting cakey around my brows, but that’s par for the course with most foundations that I wear. Settling into pores and creasing hasn’t really worsened. Foundation gone from underside of nose, though.

5.00pm
Still looking pretty good.

I finally removed my makeup at around 6.30 because the oiliness was becoming super gross.

Is NYX Angel Veil an Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer dupe?

I’m going to have to say… YES! Not quite 100% though, more like 99.7%. For me to classify something as a dupe, it has to look exactly the same as the original product – I shouldn’t be able to tell the difference. The only reason I’m marking it down to 99% is that the pore settling and undereye creasing wasn’t really present with Mineral Veil, HOWEVER it definitely was not an enormous difference. Other than that, the two sides of my face look exactly the same to me. I would happy grab either of these when doing my makeup routine, knowing that they perform very, very similarly.

Have you tried either of these primers? What’s your favorite primer?

  1. This is an amazingly thorough review. I have heard good things about the Hourglass primer but I just couldn't justify the high price so haven't tried it. I use a NYX primer – it's anti-redness but doesn't do a huge amount in that regard, but it does provide a good base for my foundation.

  2. Ever since I lurvha the full size bottle of Hourglass primer, it doesn't seem like it's working for me anymore :/ my face is shinny within hours and feels so oily grr. That angel veil looks amazing thou, it looks less oily compare to hourglass in your picture

  3. Oh no! Gosh I'm more hesitant about buying the full size now that you say that. I was going to buy it to treat myself but I might work through these two first and see how I go. Thanks for commenting, Kay!
